2024 Report: Bias Data Gathering System

Overview

During calendar year 2024, one bias‑related incident report was submitted through the Bias Data Gathering System (BDGS). As with prior years, BDGS continues to serve as an important mechanism through which community members may share concerns about experiences of bias on campus. The information collected through BDGS helps the College provide support to individuals involved, identify emerging themes, and consider broader educational and policy strategies aimed at minimizing the likelihood of future harm. These efforts may include restorative conversations, cultural awareness programming, and professional development opportunities for students, faculty, and staff. When BDGS receives submissions that may intersect with College policies, such as those related to discrimination or harassment, the appropriate office reviews the matter pursuant to existing procedures.

Incident Narrative

The 2024 report described concerns related to cultural and religious misrepresentation during a campus cultural showcase. The participant wore attire that, according to multiple observers, holds significant cultural and religious meaning related to ceremonial or leadership roles within a specific community. Following the event, the same attire was worn in a context that was perceived as inconsistent with the cultural and religious significance associated with the clothing. Several community members, including visiting international students, expressed discomfort and a sense that the cultural tradition had been misrepresented. Although BDGS does not assume intent, the report provided helpful insight into how expressions of culture—particularly when tied to religious symbolism—may be experienced by others on campus.

Conclusion

The 2024 incident highlights the importance of promoting cultural understanding and fostering respectful representation within the Kalamazoo College community. As the College continues its mission to prepare students to live and lead thoughtfully in a complex world, BDGS remains an essential tool for identifying concerns and guiding responsive action. Insights gained through this report—together with follow‑up conversations and the collaborative work of Human Resources, the Provost’s Office, and Student Development—inform both individualized support and broader educational and professional development initiatives. These efforts strengthen the College’s commitment to maintaining an environment in which intellectual inquiry and cultural exchange occur with respect, care, and openness, and in which all community members feel valued and supported.
