Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to know about summer hours?
  • Regular hours will end at 2:00pm on summer hours Fridays.
  • All summer hour participants have 3 hours of paid time off each week during Summer Hours.
Do I need to “make up” the three hours during the week?

Nope! There is no expectation to “make up” or “front load” the hours.

Will I get paid for participating in summer hours? If so, how should hourly-paid employees record the summer hour time?

Yes, you will get paid the same as you would if you had not left early. Hourly-paid staff should record 3 break hours on their timesheet.

I work less than 40 hours per week. How will summer hours affect me?

Your supervisor will work with you to adjust your schedule so that you are paid for prorated time off each week during summer hours.
Example: Someone works 25 hours per week. How much paid time off so they get during Summer Hours?
Here’s the math: 40 hrs(full-time) / 3 hrs = 0.075 * 25 (hrs/week) = 1.875 hours, which we round up to 2 hours. Someone who uses a time sheet would take 2 hours off each Summer Hours week and report 2 break hours.

I am an hourly-paid employee. How do I record benefit time (vacation, emergency, bereavement) during the summer hours period?

You would plan on working for 3 hours less than normal, but get paid as normal.
Example: You normally work Monday through Friday, from 8am – 5pm. During summer hours, your timecard might look something like this:

Monday

12:30pm – 5:00pm
8 hours worked and paid

Tuesday
8:00am – 11:30am
12:30pm – 5:00pm

Wednesday

12:30pm – 5:00pm
8 hours worked and paid

Thursday
8:00am – 11:30am
12:30pm – 5:00pm
8 hours worked and paid

Friday
8:00am – 11:30am
12:30pm – 2:00pm
2pm – 5pm (break time)
5 hours worked
8 hours paid

I am an hourly-paid employee. How do I record holiday hours for Independence Day?

Please record 8 holiday hours for Independence Day observance.

I am a salary-paid employee taking a vacation day on a Friday during the summer. How do I adjust my schedule to accommodate the Friday early release?

Salaried employees take vacation in ½ day increments. Your supervisor will work with you to ensure that between vacation and work, you have appropriately accounted for your regular workweek.

What about departments that must be on campus when students arrive before the end of summer hours, or have obligations after 2:00pm on Fridays during the summer?

Departments with required hours as determined by the relevant President’s Staff member, will adjust individual schedules to ensure coverage while maximizing summer hours participation.

Will breakfasts be served during Summer Hours?

Absolutely! Keep an eye out for regular updates on the Upcoming Events calendar. Visit the Summer Breakfasts page to reserve your department’s Friday to host.
