Summary
Reporting to the custodial coordinator, custodians perform regular tasks as assigned to ensure that Kalamazoo College is a clean, safe, and comfortable environment. Full-time custodians are eligible for benefits and have the opportunity to work in various types of buildings on campus, including academic, offices, and residence halls. Custodians are responsible for cleaning assigned buildings, including lounges, kitchens, public and private bathrooms, stairs, halls, custodial closets, windows, doors and walls. Custodians also engage in occasional project work. Custodians use a variety of cleaning products and operate equipment including vacuums, carpet extractors, and slow/high-speed buffers. Custodians are invited to attend regular exchanges of information including departmental and all-campus gatherings. Custodians attend in professional development opportunities such as in-service educational classes and on-the-job training programs.
Schedule
Successful candidates will begin employment in early January 2025. There are two available schedules. Both schedules include two 15-minute paid breaks and one 30-minute unpaid meal break.
- Thursday through Sunday: 5am – 3:30pm (Four ten-hour shifts)
- Monday through Friday: 5am or 7am, depending upon the assigned building and current need.
Duties
- Clean, polish, and sanitize surfaces as appropriate including in classrooms, offices, shared spaces, restrooms, residence halls, and work carts.
- Clean floors, to include sweeping, dusting, damp/wet mopping, stripping, waxing and buffing as scheduled.
- Clean carpets, to include vacuuming, shampooing, and extracting as scheduled.
- Clean walls and ceilings by washing, wiping, dusting, spot cleaning, etc.
- Discard waste/trash into proper containers and prepare trash receptacles for additional use.
- Assure that work/assignment areas are clean and that equipment is properly stored at all times.
- Set up tables, chairs, meeting rooms as directed.
- Responsible for reading and following labels and SDS sheets on all cleaning supplies before using
- Report any damage to facility through work order system.
- Assure that an adequate supply of housekeeping supplies to perform daily tasks are maintained in utility/janitorial closets and keep supervisor informed of supply needs.

Qualifications
The successful candidate will have a high school diploma or equivalent and will also demonstrate many of the following skills, abilities, and characteristics:
- Requires flexibility and dependability, and ability and willingness to work.
- Ability and willingness to work assigned schedule, including occasional weekends or evening hours as assigned.
- Ability to read, write and understand written labels and directions.
- Ability and willingness to follow work directions and safety rules, including use of personal protective equipment.
- Must be able to work independently and cooperatively as part of a team; be able to consistently follow training; be able to maintain a neat appearance.
- Must be physically able to move within and between campus buildings and to regularly perform very active work for daily eight hour shifts; to walk, stand, bend, stoop and climb; to grasp, lift, carry and push/pull cleaning equipment, tools and supplies; and to perform the cleaning functions listed above, primarily in indoor environment, but also outdoors in inclement weather.
