Self-Identification Data

Kalamazoo College is required to report counts of faculty and staff to the United States Department of Education’s Integrated Post-secondary Education Data System (IPEDS). The required information includes aggregate number of faculty/staff by employment status (full or part time), by faculty status and academic rank, by occupational activity, by gender, and by race/ethnicity. No individual names are reported. The College also finds the information provided to track institutional progress with respect to representational diversity among faculty and staff. Participation is optional and deeply appreciated.

    Definitions The U.S. Dept. of Education (Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System) racial/ethnic categories as used in this survey do not denote scientific definitions of anthropological origins. The categories are: Hispanic or Latino – A person of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race. American Indian or Alaskan Native – A person having origins in any of the original peoples of North and South America (including Central America) who maintains cultural identification through tribal affiliation or community recognition. Asian – A person having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, or the Indian Subcontinent, including, for example, Cambodia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippine Islands, Thailand and Vietnam. Black or African American – A person having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa. Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander – A person having origins in any of the original peoples of Hawaii, Guam, Samoa, or other Pacific Islands. White – A person having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, the Middle East or North Africa.
