Kalamazoo College seeks a knowledgeable and safety-focused Woodshop Technician to support the Art and Art History department’s sculpture program. Reporting to the department chair or sculpture faculty, this part-time position plays a key role in ensuring a safe, well-maintained, and accessible woodshop environment for students.
This position is approximately 10 hours per week over three eleven-week academic terms, with scheduled shifts on Monday and Wednesday evenings and Sunday afternoons.

In this role, you will:
- Instruct students in the safe operation of woodshop equipment and tools
- Monitor open shop hours to ensure compliance with safety standards and practices
- Facilitate woodshop practicums, including short workshops on foundational skills and technical exercises
- Maintain a safe, organized, and functional shop environment
- Monitor equipment condition and coordinate routine maintenance and repairs
- Arrange for external repairs when necessary
- Support the organization of tools, equipment, and supplies within the sculpture area
- Assist with material pick-up for classes and shop needs as time allows
- Contribute to departmental projects and initiatives in support of the sculpture program
- Help foster a culture of safety, respect, and creative exploration
You’re a great fit if you have:
We’re seeking someone with a high school diploma or equivalent and at least three years of experience in building or property maintenance, or a related trade. Ideal candidates bring:
- Have extensive woodworking experience and a strong understanding of shop safety practices
- Hold a high school diploma or equivalent (some college education strongly preferred)
- Bring an art background and/or formal art education (preferred)
- Are confident teaching and guiding students with varying levels of experience
- Communicate clearly and are comfortable providing hands-on instruction
- Are attentive to detail and committed to maintaining a safe work environment
- Can troubleshoot equipment issues and coordinate repairs when needed
- Are organized, dependable, and able to manage responsibilities during scheduled evening and weekend hours
- Enjoy working in a collaborative, creative academic setting
- Have familiarity with welding and/or ceramics (a plus, but not required)
