Position Summary

Reporting to the associate director, this position provides an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate of a liberal arts college to attain professional experience in the fields of social justice, community and educational programming. The primary function of this position is to assist with general program development, implementation, and evaluation at the ACSJL. The ideal candidate cares strongly about social justice work, preferably with a background in social justice activism and/or community organizing and is adaptable and detail oriented. 

Qualified candidates for this position must be highly organized with demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize among multiple responsibilities and stay focused amidst competing priorities. Strong time management and workspace organization skills; promptness and consistency in the workplace are essential. Preference will be given to a graduate of Kalamazoo College, ideally having worked with the ACSJL.

This is a benefits-eligible, one-year appointment (summer 2025-summer 2026) with possible renewal for a second year, contingent upon department needs.

Responsibilities

  • Provide assistance across ACSJL’s various social justice programs and projects.
  • Responsible for maintaining ACSJL’s program and events calendar
  • Assist in developing student social justice programs and events
  • Collaborate with the Student Program and Training Coordinator to design, implement and facilitate student programs and events
  • Facilitate Social Justice SIP Symposium and social media campaigns
  • Initiate and ensure student participation in ACSJL programs and projects including, but not limited to Resisting Harm, Building the Future and Community and Resistance
  • Coordinate activities, logistics and calendars
  • Maintain effective communication with multiple constituencies (students, faculty/staff, community partners).

Qualifications

This entry-level position, for a recent graduate of Kalamazoo College, builds upon their experiences with social justice, community, and educational programming. The qualified candidate will have many of the following skills, abilities, and characteristics:

  • Demonstrated success with complex program and event planning and logistics
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience working with diverse communities on and off campus, and desire to build inclusive and just communities
  • A history of social justice involvement, including knowledge of issues such as women’s and LGBTQ rights, youth activism, global social injustices, etc
  • Considerable experience with/or ability to learn Google Drive, Microsoft Office suite, Colleague, Word Press, Canva, and Instagram
  • Comfort with ambiguity, and ability to work nimbly in a fast-paced and constantly changing environment
  • Willingness to learn on the job; high degree of initiative and flexibility
  • Desire to work collaboratively
  • Maintain professional boundaries with students, the College, and the ACSJL in a fluid community environment.
  • Work closely with and support other Arcus staff members as needed
  • Ensure deadlines are met and adapts to changing priorities
  • Work to collect and organize information for reports
