Position Summary
The Custodial Coordinator is a working supervisor role responsible for supporting daily custodial operations and leading a team to maintain clean, safe, and comfortable facilities across campus. Reporting to the Administrative and Custodial Services Manager and serving as a member of the Facilities Management Leadership Team, this benefits-eligible position combines hands-on custodial work with front-line staff supervision, scheduling, project coordination, and supply management.
Responsibilities
- Supervise custodial personnel to ensure that all areas are consistently maintained in clean, safe and comfortable conditions.
- Plan, schedule and oversee work assignments and special projects.
- Performance management:
- Set and communicate clear expectations for custodial team members through written materials, team meetings and one-on-one meetings.
- Continuously monitor attendance and job performance and provide frequent feedback and coaching to ensure quality performance.
- Working with Manager and Human Resources, document and address attendance and performance concerns as they arise, including timely verbal and written warnings.
- Complete and deliver written performance evaluations at 30 day intervals for 90 days for new custodians and annually for each custodian assigned to team.
- Identify training needs and opportunities for direct reports.
- Maintain written standard operating procedures for custodial work
- Develop, maintain and apply knowledge of supervisory best practices and APPA operational guidelines. Participate in training programs and work with Manager and with Human Resources to ensure compliance with employment law, including but not limited to FLSA, FMLA and ADA.
- Work with Manager to maintain adequate and cost-effective inventory level of supplies and equipment.
- Perform custodial tasks when appropriate to balance workload.
- Relieve, assist or fill in on other jobs as assigned by Manager.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will have a high school diploma or equivalent and will also demonstrate many of the following skills, abilities, and characteristics:
- Some college level coursework helpful
- Minimum five years’ direct work experience in front line supervision with some level of custodial operations experience
- Strong demonstrated commitment to quality performance and excellent customer service
- Effective team building skills and strong organizational skills
- Ability to maintain a positive supervisory relationship with employees
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Proficient with computers including email, web-based applications, and standard digital tools necessary for effective communication and workflow management in a modern workplace.
- Commitment to environmentally sustainable custodial operations
- Demonstrated commitment to fostering a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment for all individuals, with an openness to understanding and engaging with different perspectives and experiences
- Must possess and maintain a valid Michigan drivers license and an acceptable driving record in accord with College policy.
