Position Summary
Reporting to the Custodial Coordinator, the Custodial Team leader will assist the Custodial Coordinator in overseeing the work of the custodial staff, providing training and guidance as needed while performing the work of a custodian. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible position.
Responsibilities
Work assignments and schedules
- Custodians may be assigned to any buildings, projects and work schedules as needed, and work assignments and schedules may change at any time.
- Starting times for current first shift assignments vary from 5am to 7am, depending upon the assigned building and current needs, with ending times from 1:30pm to 3:30pm.
- Some weekend work is required.
Lead Custodial Duties
- Assist Custodial Coordinator with the training of custodial staff.
- Assist with quality audits and room checks.
- Assist Custodial Coordinator with special projects and assignments as needed.
- Assume supervisory duties in the absence of the Custodial Coordinator.
Custodial Services
- Perform day-to-day custodial functions as assigned to ensure that facilities are clean, safe and comfortable.
- Clean/polish furnishings, fixtures, ledges, etc.
- Clean and sanitize restroom fixtures, hardware, partitions, floors, etc.
- Clean windows/mirrors in bathrooms and entrance/exit ways.
- Clean floors, to include sweeping, dusting, damp/wet mopping, stripping, waxing and buffing as scheduled.
- Clean carpets, to include vacuuming, extracting, etc.
- Clean walls and ceilings by washing, wiping, dusting, spot cleaning, etc.
- Clean hallways, stairways and elevators.
- Care for and clean entrances of assigned buildings.
- Discard waste/trash/recycling into proper containers and reline receptacles.
- Assure that work/assignment areas are clean and that equipment is properly stored at all times.
Safety and Sanitation
- Assure that assigned work areas are maintained in a clean, sanitary and safe.
- Responsible for reading labels and SDS sheets on all cleaning supplies before using and following directions.
- Report any damage or maintenance needs using computerized work order system
- Follow all standard operating procedures.
Equipment and Supply Functions
- Assure that equipment is cleaned and properly stored at the end of the shift.
- Assist others in lifting heavy equipment, supplies, etc. as directed or requested.
- Assure that an adequate supply of housekeeping supplies to perform daily tasks are maintained in utility/janitorial closets and keep supervisor informed of supply needs.
- Clean work/supply carts, equipment, etc. as directed.
Staff Development
- Attend departmental and staff meetings as directed.
- Attend and participate in educational classes, on-the-job training programs, etc as scheduled or directed.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will have a high school diploma (or equivalent) and will also demonstrate many of the following skills, abilities, and characteristics:
- Demonstrated leadership skills, experience supervising the work of others.
- Demonstrated professional honesty and integrity in the workplace
- Good communication and decision-making skills
- Commitment to building and maintaining an inclusive work environment and willingness to step in and correct inappropriate behavior.
- Adhere to timeline and monitor progress to keep projects on schedule.
- Ability and willingness to work assigned schedule, including occasional weekends or evening hours as assigned.
- Must be physically able to move within and between campus buildings and to regularly perform very active work for daily eight-hour shifts; to walk, stand, bend, stoop and climb; to grasp, lift, carry and push/pull cleaning equipment, tools and supplies; and to perform the cleaning functions listed above, primarily in indoor environment, but also outdoors in inclement weather.
