Position Summary
The director of institutional research is responsible for research, analysis, reporting and management of data in support of institutional decision-making. Reporting to the provost, this 12-month, full-time, benefits-eligible position provides critical support and expertise to faculty and staff across campus who use institutional data in their roles.
Responsibilities
Research and Analysis
- Design, administer, and analyze internal institutional surveys and research studies
- Oversee, administer, and analyze external and national surveys (e.g., NSSE)
- Provide data and statistics to internal and external audiences
- Support college planning efforts through research, analysis, and assessment, shared through data reports and summaries
- Compile benchmark information about peer institutions
- Provide research consultation and expertise to various college offices and departments
Reporting and Data Management
- Query large databases for reporting and analysis purposes
- Build, merge, and analyze large data sets
- Manage internal and external reporting (e.g., IPEDS, Common Data Set, and the National Science Foundation Higher Education Research & Development Survey), ensuring accuracy and integrity of data reported
- Support business analytics, mandatory reporting at state and federal levels, strategic planning, student retention analysis, and other data-focused decision-support activities
- Serve as IPEDS keyholder and HEDS liaison
- Develop data visualizations and summaries
- Support efforts to foster the culture of data-informed decision making across campus
- Lead data governance with campus partners (e.g., data definitions, accuracy, and reporting standards)
Accreditation
- Work with the College’s HLC Liaison and others to prepare for reaccreditation reviews
- Stay informed of changes and developments in the reaccreditation process
- Prepare HLC annual institutional update
Representation
- Represent the Office of Institutional Research, as needed, on various campus committees
- Represent the Office of Institutional Research on the Academic Administrative Council of Kalamazoo
Qualifications
The successful candidate will have a Master’s degree (PhD preferred) and will also demonstrate many of the following skills, abilities, and characteristics:
- A high level of organization, attention to detail, and a demonstrated ability for follow-through while handling multiples tasks simultaneously.
- Strong quantitative analysis skills, written and verbal communication skills, and interpersonal skills are required along with the ability to convey technical information to groups with varying levels of prior statistical knowledge.
- The position requires an ability to work collaboratively with faculty and staff colleagues from across campus.
- Experience with data visualization, Informer data-reporting tools, Ellucian Colleague, and relevant programming languages (e.g., Python, SQL) desirable.
