Position Summary
Reporting to the Architectural Trades Coordinator, this benefits-eligible position works as part of a team with other skilled trades and support staff in the Facilities Management department. Daily responsibilities include campus-wide masonry and flooring installation and maintenance support to all buildings and associated areas, including coordination with outside contractors. The person in this role should be proficient with both modern power tools and traditional hand tools for masonry and flooring. This person can expect to work in all weather conditions, with various materials, lift, and carry heavy objects. They perform condition assessments, estimate costs, and maintain excellent records. Work is assigned through a computerized maintenance management system, and all team members are responsible for tracking their workload and assignment priorities and to log their time and progress daily. Facilities Management’s workload varies from day to day, and occasionally employees will be required to perform work outside of their specific areas of responsibility. Availability for occasional overtime and emergency call-ins is required.
Responsibilities
- Maintaining tools and workspaces
- Knowledge of the principles and methods used in the removal/repair and installation of brick, stone, block, with pointing and caulking.
- Cutting, shaping, dressing materials, mixing cement, and mortar
- Lifting, carrying, and placing prepared blocks
- Reading and following technical drawings
- Installing various types of flooring including ceramic, composite and carpet tile
- Restoring or installing masonry walls and walkways
- Interfaces with team members, direct supervisor, and contractors on projects to coordinate activities as required ethically and professionally.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will have a high school diploma or equivalent and will also demonstrate many of the following skills, abilities, and characteristics:
- Successful completion of a masonry apprenticeship program is preferred
- Proven experience as a mason (3-5 years preferred)
- Hands-on experience in working with a variety of masonry and flooring materials
- Excellent understanding of masonry techniques and methods of installation and construction
- Proficient in using electrical and manual equipment and measurement tools
- Proficient with electronic communication and ability to use Computerized Maintenance Management system to track, schedule and document work
- Ability to read technical documents and drawings
- Orientation towards safety, knowledge, and adherence to MiOSHA regulations and safe working practices
- Good understanding of basic math
- Good physical condition and endurance
- A strong commitment to diversity and inclusion efforts to support a sense of belonging for all and a working understanding, or willingness to learn, of current issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace
- A strong commitment to the delivery of high-quality customer services
- At least five years of direct experience performing carpentry work for a licensed contractor
- Self-motivated with the ability to work well with minimal supervision, alone or with others
- Commitment to sustainable maintenance practices, procedures and building materials
- Willingness to engage in continuous improvement of skills and department processes
- Must possess a valid Michigan driver’s license and a driving record in accord with College policy
