Position Summary

Reporting to the director of campus safety, campus safety officers perform proactive foot and mobile patrol of Kalamazoo College spaces to provide aid to community members and regulation enforcement. Full-time campus safety officers are immediately eligible for full benefits. They will have the opportunity to be assigned to any shift to provide consistent shifts while staffing the 24/7 operation.

Duties Include

  • Performs a wide variety of community relations functions including meeting and talking with students, employees, and citizens visiting campus; provides information and advice on safety measures; visits various campus facilities to determine service needs; assists pedestrians and motorists and students to establish rapport and support for the Department of Campus Safety.
  • Performs traffic direction to ensure a smooth flow of traffic in and out of campus as needed. Performs campus parking enforcement by issuing citations for violations and appropriate follow-up.
  • Patrols assigned area primarily on foot maintaining high visibility; secures buildings as appropriate; monitors radio/telephone and promptly responds to calls for service received; detects and reports suspicious activity and/or needs for Kalamazoo College support. Provides written report(s) to the director for appropriate follow-up.
  • Conducts preliminary investigations as needed; stabilizes incident scenes and alerts appropriate personnel to resolve conflicts; protects crime scenes and evidence until City of Kalamazoo officers arrive; conducts preliminary interviews of victims and witnesses; assists city officers and victims within policy; maintains visual contact of suspects, if possible, from a safe distance but does not apprehend suspects.
  • Maintains personal uniform and equipment in excellent condition and personal appearance at all times.
  • Completes all training and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a high school diploma (or equivalent) and will also demonstrate many of the following skills, abilities, and characteristics:

  • Prefer graduation from an accredited college or university.  Prefer experience in campus safety work, community service, public service, social service, and emergency management experience.  Any combination of education and experience listed above may be considered in the selection of the best-qualified candidate.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing; to understand and execute difficult oral and written instructions; to obtain information through interviews and observation.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Word and other software for documentation of general incidents, criminal reports, and other relevant data collection.
  • Ability to work effectively and apply good judgment in tense situations, to analyze situations quickly and objectively and to determine the proper course of action; to cope with situations courteously and tactfully, firmly, and with respect for the rights of others; to react quickly, calmly and appropriately under emergency conditions.
  • General working knowledge of laws. Must possess and maintain a valid state motor vehicle operator’s license and a driving record in compliance with the College’s policies.  Must be able to pass a complete background investigation.
  • Physical requirements of the job include the ability to respond immediately and appropriately to emergencies; the ability to work irregular hours with changing shifts, to move frequently and quickly in all areas of campus, in indoor and outdoor environments, between and within buildings, with extended exposure to a variety of weather conditions in all seasons.
