Position Summary
Under the general direction of the CIO, this position has primary oversight of library collection management and works in collaboration with the reference and instruction librarian to provide library instruction and in-depth research support for faculty, students, staff, and other library users. The Collection and Reference Services Librarian participates in appropriate faculty and professional activities including serving on college and departmental committees. This is a full-time, twelve-month, benefits-eligible, administrative staff/non-teaching faculty appointment.
Responsibilities
- Manages and assesses monographic and serial collections in print and electronic formats
- Supervises the ordering of all materials and manages the life cycle of licensed resources
- Maintains vendor relations, negotiates pricing and licensing agreements, and coordinates cooperative collection development with other libraries, consortia and statewide initiatives
- Catalogs and processes materials in multiple formats and maintains the integrity of the online catalog
- Collaborates with the Digital Services Librarian to ensure catalog and electronic resources are available and bibliographic data are accurate
- Determines policies and procedures for library acquisitions and collection management
- Provides seasonal library instruction
- Provides support for student and faculty research
- Serve as evening and weekend supervisor as scheduled
- Performs additional duties as assigned by the CIO
Qualifications
The successful candidate will have a ALA-accredited MLS or MLIS degree and will also demonstrate many of the following skills, abilities, and characteristics:
- Demonstrated commitment to service; experience in acquisitions, cataloging, and collection development and familiarity with current trends;
- Knowledge of trends and applications in electronic resource management;
- Experience with print and electronic serials acquisitions and management;
- Knowledge of review and evaluation resources for library materials in all formats;
- Familiarity with current reference resources;
- Knowledge of information literacy practices and principles;
- Excellent interpersonal communication, presentation, and organization skills;
- Ability to work independently and in a team;
- Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies and apply skills quickly;
- Evidence of flexibility, enthusiasm, and collegiality;
- Adept at handling multiple responsibilities;
- The ability to work effectively with faculty, students, and staff, and
- Preferably, some familiarity with Alma Library Management System and an understanding of the academic objectives of a residential liberal arts college.
Physical requirements of the position include ability to work in a library/office environment with extensive use of computer and telephone; ability to lift and carry up to ten pounds; ability to read and write and to handle and process both paper and electronic documents; ability to move between and within campus buildings.
