Kalamazoo College seeks dedicated and community-minded individuals to join our Campus Safety team. Campus Safety Officers play a vital role in fostering a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
This position involves proactive patrol, incident response, rule enforcement, and strong community engagement. Candidates must be flexible and willing to work a variety of shifts, as the department operates 24/7. The anticipated schedule for this opening is flexible and will be determined at the time of hire.

In this role, you will:
- Conduct proactive foot and mobile patrols to maintain high visibility and deter crime
- Patrol campus buildings and grounds, including routine security checks and locking/unlocking facilities
- Respond promptly to calls for service via radio or phone and assess situations quickly and objectively
- Enforce campus rules and regulations, including parking enforcement and citation issuance
- Detect, document, and report suspicious activity, violations, and safety concerns
- Conduct preliminary investigations, including interviewing victims and witnesses and gathering information
- Stabilize incident scenes, protect evidence, and coordinate with city law enforcement as appropriate
- Provide assistance to victims and guide them through appropriate procedures
- Conduct accident investigations on campus property and prepare reports for city authorities when necessary
- Perform traffic control and assist with the safe flow of vehicles and pedestrians
- Support campus community members through service-oriented interactions and safety guidance
- Prepare clear and accurate written reports and maintain documentation using Microsoft Word and related systems
- Attend training sessions and participate in public safety presentations and outreach
- Maintain a professional appearance and keep uniforms and equipment in excellent condition

Ideal candidates bring:
- Hold a high school diploma or GED (college coursework in criminal justice, law, or social sciences preferred)
- Have experience in campus safety, public service, community service, or emergency management (preferred)
- Understand basic laws, jurisdictional guidelines, and the role of private security
- Are calm under pressure and can respond quickly and appropriately to emergency situations
- Communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing
- Are detail-oriented and able to accurately gather and document information
- Work well with people from diverse backgrounds and can build trust through respectful interactions
- Are physically able to patrol the campus in all weather conditions and respond rapidly to incidents
- Are flexible and available to work varied and irregular shifts, including nights and weekends
- Can use standard office software (e.g., Microsoft Word) for reporting and documentation
- Hold a valid driver’s license and maintain a driving record that meets College standards
- Successfully pass a background and driving record investigation
