Kalamazoo College seeks multiple therapists who are organized, compassionate, and reliable mental health professional dedicated to supporting the well-being of college students. Reporting to the director of student health and counseling services, this role is essential in creating a safe, responsive, and inclusive campus environment. The therapist provides direct counseling services using a brief counseling model, conducts mental health triage, responds to student needs, and works closely with campus medical staff to ensure coordinated care and holistic support for students. Responsibilities
Location & Schedule
This per-hour role is primarily conducted in person and will be housed at the Health and Counseling Center in the Hicks Student Center. The schedule will vary based on mutual predetermined arrangement, varying between 20-40 hours per week for approximately 35 weeks per year, aligning with the academic calendar. Positions that total 1,040 hours per year are considered benefits-eligible.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide individual and group counseling to students using a brief counseling model, addressing a wide range of mental health concerns.
- Conduct mental health triage to assess student needs, prioritize care, and ensure timely access to appropriate services.
- Respond promptly and sensitively to student needs, including crisis intervention and walk-in appointments.
- Refer students to local community mental health providers or resources when additional or specialized care is needed.
- Develop and facilitate workshops, outreach, and wellness programs tailored to the student population.
- Maintain accurate and confidential clinical documentation.
- Participate in campus-wide mental health initiatives and collaborate with faculty, staff, and student organizations.
- Work closely with campus medical staff to coordinate care and support integrated health services for students.
- Manage scheduling and resources to ensure efficient service delivery.
- Supervise and mentor counseling interns or junior staff, providing guidance, training, and performance feedback.*
- Contribute to the development and implementation of policies and programs that support student mental health.*
Qualifications and Attributes
The successful candidate will have a Master’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field, be licensed or license-eligible in Michigan, with full licensure obtained within 90 days of hire, and will also demonstrate many of the following skills, abilities, and characteristics:
- Enthusiasm and experience working with college-aged populations.
- Skilled in brief counseling models and short-term intervention strategies.
- Strong organizational skills and reliability in managing caseloads and documentation.
- Compassionate, approachable, and responsive to diverse student needs.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, including medical staff.
- Experience or training in mental health triage and crisis response preferred.
- Commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive campus environment.
- Flexibility and adaptability in responding to changing student needs.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proactive in developing and implementing mental health programs.
- Demonstrated supervisory experience or strong interest in developing supervisory skills.*
